NEW YORK -- The City College of New York women's volleyball team earned a dominant victory over Old Westbury at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Friday night. The Beavers (9-7) topped the Panthers (8-11) by a 25-12, 25-9, 25-14 count for their ninth win in their last 12 matches.
CCNY took control immediately, jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the first set. After Old Westbury responded with five straight points to pull within one at 7-6, a
Kayla Oge (New City, NY) kill started a 14-3 Beaver run that made the score 21-9. Oge's fifth kill of the frame brought CCNY to set point, and
Nicole Polanco (West Haverstraw, NY) followed with a kill to close out the Beavers' 25-12 win.
There were three ties early in the second set before a 7-0 spurt put the Beavers in front 12-5. CCNY ended the set on an 11-2 run and finished off the period, 25-9, on a kill by Oge.
In the third set, CCNY opened up a 6-2 cushion, then extended the margin to 12-5 on an
Oanh Han (Brooklyn, NY) service ace. After Old Westbury used a three-point rally to trim its deficit to 12-8, an Oge kill sparked a 5-1 spurt that gave the Beavers a 17-9 advantage. Oge's final kill of the match made it 23-14, then
Dzeneta Harambasic (Ridgewood, NY) served back-to-back aces to end it. CCNY took the third set, 25-14, to complete the sweep.
Oge paced the Beavers with 13 kills on .611 hitting. Polanco added 10 kills, while Harambasic had a double-double with 36 assists and 14 digs. She also served two aces. Han posted a team-best 14 digs, and
Rachel Ramirez (New York, NY) contributed 12 digs to go along with six kills.
Michelle Hu (Staten Island, NY) tallied 11 digs, as CCNY held a 62-54 edge in that category. As a team, the Beavers hit .174 (40 kills, 19 errors, 121 attempts) in the match.
For the Panthers, Joelle Desrosiers led the way with seven kills, 13 digs and three blocks. Hillary Bennett notched a match-high 18 digs, and Ally Parker handed out 13 assists. Daesha Garrison, meanwhile, recorded three blocks.
After playing three matches in four days, the Beavers are now off until Tuesday night, when they visit Saint Elizabeth (8-9) at 7 p.m.
