Beavers Win On Senior Night

NEW YORK -- On Thursday night, the City College of New York women's volleyball team (10-8) capped an undefeated home regular season with a 25-15, 25-20, 25-12 victory over Medgar Evers (0-23).  With the win, the Beavers reached double-digit victories for the first time since 2014, as well as guaranteeing themselves a .500 record.

Prior to the match, CCNY honored its four seniors--Dzeneta Harambasic (Ridgewood, NY), Kayla Oge (New City, NY), Leanna Pham (Bronx, NY) and Nicole Polanco (West Haverstraw, NY).

The Beavers then immediately seized control of the match, scoring the first three points before extending their cushion to 7-2.  After Medgar Evers pulled within 8-5, CCNY went on a 7-1 run, with back-to-back Oge kills making it 15-6.  Oge's fifth kill of the set closed out a 25-15 win in which the Beavers hit a combined .312 (15 kills, five errors, 32 attempts).

There were three early ties in the second set before CCNY used a 13-2 spurt to go up 15-6.  The Cougars responded with an 8-2 rally to pull within three, 17-14, but the Beavers immediately countered with four of the next five points to bring the margin back to six at 21-15.  An Arianna Rivas (New York, NY) kill gave CCNY a set point opportunity at 24-18, and the Beavers took the set by a 25-20 count.

After a Scarle Mejia (New York, NY) service ace gave the Beavers a 6-3 lead in the third set, Medgar Evers rallied for six of the next eight points to pull ahead 9-8.  CCNY scored the next point to tie the score and send Harmabasic to the service line.  She served five consecutive aces to ignite a 13-0 rally that gave the Beavers a 22-9 advantage.  Harambasic had seven total aces during the run.  She assisted on Polanco's kill that set up match point at 24-12.  CCNY wrapped up the match with a 25-12 set win.

Polanco led CCNY with 14 kills on .393 hitting.  Harambasic, meawhile, finished with 27 assists to go along with her seven assists.  Oge and Rivas tallied seven kills apiece, while Oanh Han (Brooklyn, NY) tallied a team-best eight digs.  Pham added seven digs for the Beavers, who hit .225 (36-16-89) as a team.

Melisa Wright hit .429 for the Cougars, smashing six kills without an error in 14 attempts.  Cristina Carnegie dished out seven assists, while Sashamoni Burnett recorded three blocks.  Quiara Brye Bey contributed 11 digs, as Medgar Evers boasted a 30-29 advantage in that category.

CCNY has one match remaining before the CUNY Athletic Conference Tournament.  The Beavers conclude the regular season with a 3 p.m. matchup against Yeshiva (0-18) at Barcuh's ARC Arena on Sunday.
