BROOKLYN, NY -- After a two-week break from competition, the City College of New York women's volleyball team returned to action on Tuesday night with a matchup at St. Joseph's Brooklyn. The long layoff proved to be no obstacle for the Beavers (4-5), as they dominated the first set en route to a 25-9, 28-26, 26-24 triumph over the Bears (6-7) at the Hill Center. It was CCNY's third straight victory, all of which have been three-set sweeps.
CCNY dominated the first set, jumping out to a 15-1 lead, including an 11-0 run that featured five
Kayla Oge (New City, NY) service aces. An ace by
Oanh Han (Brooklyn, NY) made it 21-4, and a
Rachel Ramirez (New York, NY) kill closed out a 25-9 set win for the Beavers. CCNY hit a stellar .588 in the frame, slamming 10 kills without an error in 17 attempts.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair that featured 12 ties and seven lead changes. After St. Joseph's Brooklyn opened up a 12-11 advantage, the Beavers scored eight of the next 10 points to go up 19-14. The Bears rallied to tie it at 23-23 before an Oge kill brought CCNY to set point. St. Joseph's Brooklyn fought off two set point opportunities, but CCNY eventually finished off the frame, 28-26.
In the third set, the Beavers used an 11-4 spurt to turn a 4-4 deadlock into a 15-8 advantage. St. Joseph's Brooklyn countered with a 12-2 rally to pull ahead 20-17, but CCNY responded with six straight points to regain the lead, 23-20. After the Bears reached set point at 24-23,
Arianna Rivas (New York, NY) smashed a kill to bring CCNY even. The Beavers claimed the next point, as well, then Oge ripped a kill to close out the set, 26-24, and the 3-0 victory.
Oge paced the Beavers with nine kills on .562 hitting, and she also recorded six aces.
Nicole Polanco (West Haverstraw, NY) finished with eight kills and 12 digs, while Ramirez had six kills and 11 digs.
Dzeneta Harambasic (Ridgewood, NY) posted a double-double with 29 assists and 11 digs, and
Michelle Hu (Staten Island, NY) tallied a match-high 20 digs. CCNY outdug St. Joseph's Brooklyn 70-57 and hit .132 (33-18-114) as a team.
For the Bears, Cristina Morales led the way with eight kills, 13 digs and three aces. Valentina Urgo added six kills and 13 digs, while Briana Marrazzo contributed 13 digs of her own. Kaitlyn Intindola handed out 19 assists. As a team, St. Joseph's Brooklyn hit .042 (25-20-120).
On Saturday, CCNY (1-2 CUNYAC) resumes its CUNYAC slate with a pair of matches at Brooklyn College. The Beavers take on the host Bulldogs (10-7, 3-1 CUNYAC) at 10 a.m., then face York (5-6, 1-2 CUNYAC) at 12 p.m.
