ONEONTA, NY -- The City College of New York men's basketball team began the Hartwick College Tip-Off Tournament with a matchup against the host Hawks on Friday night. Despite
Yassine Sakhi's (New York, NY) 24 points and 15 more by
Isaiah Denard (Staten Island, NY), the Beavers (0-2) fell to the Hawks (2-1) by a 91-65 count at Lambros Arena.
Sakhi also grabbed seven rebounds, while
Romello Rashad (New York, NY) had eight boards and five assists.
Isaiah Williams (Bronx, NY) contributed eight points and four assists, and
Daniel Piszczatowski (Middle VIllage, NY) registered seven points. As a team, CCNY shot 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field, 31 percent (9-of-29) from long range, and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) at the free throw line.
Pat Garey led four Hawks in double-figures with 16 points. He also had three assists and three steals. Kyle Bradshaw finished with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Tommy Kelly tallied 11 points. Nick Eiler posted 10 points off the bench, and Bobby Connors notched eight points to go along with four assists. Austin Haskell, meanwhile, collected 10 rebounds and four steals. Hartwick outrebounded CCNY 49-33 and shot 47.1 percent (33-of-70) form the floor. The Hawks went 11-for-34 (32.4 percent) from three-point land and 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) at the charity stripe.
It was a 6-4 game after four minutes, but Hartwick then went on a 20-4 run to open up a 26-8 advantage. The margin reached 22 points at 32-10 before a Denard layup started a 7-0 CCNY spurt that pulled the Beavers within 32-17. However, the Hawks scored the next three points to push their cushion to 38-17, and Hartwick's lead was 45-25 at halftime.
After the Beavers opened the second half by notching eight of the first 12 points, Hartwick responded with seven straight to increase their lead to 56-33 with 15:51 left. A Sakhi three-pointer midway through the period cut CCNY's deficit to 69-52, but the Beavers would get no closer. Hartwick's advantage reached a game-high 28 points, 91-63, on Jaquan Dickerson's free throws with 2:25 remaining, and
Torrel Trim (Springfield Gardens, NY) sank a pair of late foul shots to finish off the scoring.
CCNY will take on Plattsburgh State (0-1) in the consolation game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
