ONEONTA, NY -- On Saturday afternoon, the City College of New York men's basketball team (0-3) fell to Plattsburgh State (1-1) by a 79-62 count at Lambros Arena in the consolation game of the Hartwick College Tip-Off Tournament.
Yassine Sakhi (New York, NY) finished with 17 points an nine rebounds to earn a place on the All-Tournament Team.
After Sakhi scored the first basket of the game, the Cardinals rattled off five straight points to go up 5-2. Four CCNY free throws put the Beavers back in front, 6-5, but Plattsburgh State responded with a 23-8 run to open up a 29-13 advantage with 8:27 left in the first half.
CCNY countered with a 16-2 spurt of its own, pulling within two on an
Athanasios Kamberis (New Hyde Park, NY) trey that made it 31-29 with 2:05 remaining before halftime. Plattsburgh State ended the half by scoring six of the final eight points, though, to take a 37-31 advantage into the locker room.
A Travis Cox jumper to open the second half extended the margin to eight points, 39-31, but the Beavers got three-pointers from
Romello Rashad (New York, NY) and
Isaiah Denard (Staten Island, NY) on back-to-back possessions to get back within two, 39-37.
It was a three-point game, 46-43, when Plattsburgh State went on a 29-10 run that increased the margin to 22 points, 75-53, with 4:42 remaining. CCNY scored the next seven points to get back within 15 at 75-60, but the Beavers would get no closer, as the Cardinals won by a 79-62 count.
Sakhi led three Beavers in double-figures with his 17 points. Rashad had 13 points and six assists, while Kamberis contributed 10 points off the bench. In addition, Denard and
Isaiah Williams (Bronx, NY) tallied nine points apiece. CCNY shot 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from the field, 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from long range, and 86.7 percent (13-of-15) at the line.
Five Cardinals scored in double-figures, led by Cox's 19 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Axel Rodriguez finished with 15 points, while Cameron Ness and Nick DeAngelis both had 12 points and seven boards. Erik Salo, meanwhile, just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Marlon Todd handed out six assists for Plattsburgh State, which shot 48.4 percent (30-of-62) as a team. The Cardinals were 8-for-26 (30.8 percent) from three-point land and 11-for-16 (68.8 percent) at the charity stripe. Plattsburgh State also outrebounded CCNY 45-31.
Up next for the Beavers is the home opener next Saturday. Rutgers-Camden (2-1) visits Nat Holman Gymnasium at 4:30 p.m. in the second half of a doubleheader with the CCNY women's team. It will be Wounded Warriors/Veterans Appreciation Day and feature a special ceremony honoring the veterans between games.
