NEW YORK -- After trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half, the City College of New York men's basketball team had the ball and a chance to tie with 18 seconds left on Saturday afternoon. However, the Beavers' three-point attempt was off the mark and Rutgers-Camden's Isaac Destin grabbed the rebound before hitting two free throws to seal a 73-68 victory for the Scarlet Raptors (3-1) over CCNY (0-4) at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
A three-point play by Destin gave the Scarlet Raptors their largest lead of the game, a 49-33 advantage, before
Isaiah Williams (Bronx, NY) sank a layup to begin the comeback. On CCNY's next possession,
Yassine Sakhi (New York, NY) was fouled while shooting a trey, and he sank all three foul shots to cut the margin to 11 points, 49-38, with 11:03 remaining.
Rutgers-Camden still led by 13 points, 68-55, when
Romello Rashad (New York, NY) drained a pair of free throws at the 3:12 mark. That started a 13-3 CCNY run, and the Beavers pulled within three, 71-68, on
Daniel Piszczatowski's (Middle Village, NY) layup with 19 seconds to go.
CCNY fouled immediately, and Rutgers-Camden's Keysean Simmonds missed both shots, with Sakhi grabbing the rebound on the second. The Beavers pushed the ball up the floor and got a look from three on an inbounds play. CCNY worked it around to Williams, but his shot fell short and Destin secured the rebound, effectively putting the game away for Rutgers-Camden.
Prior to the game, the Beavers held a ceremony honoring Wounded Warrior Project veteran Renee Hernandez, who served two tours of duty in Iraq as a member of the U.S. Army. Renee's son, Tristan, then threw up the ceremonial jump ball, and they both sat on the CCNY bench during the contest.
Once play got underway, Rutgers-Newark raced out to a 7-2 advantage before a Rashad layup and a pair of
Athanasios Kamberis (New Hyde Park, NY) three-pointers gave the Beavers a 10-7 lead. After a Williams layup gave CCNY its largest lead of the game, a 14-9 cushion with 8:31 left in the first half, the Scarlet Raptors responded with a 12-2 run to pull ahead, 21-16. Rutgers-Camden held a 26-20 edge at the half.
Rashad led four Beavers in double-figures with 16 points. He also tallied seven rebounds and six assists. Sakhi finished with 15 points, while
Isaiah Denard (Staten Island, NY) had 11 points and six boards. Piszczatowski added 10 points and six rebounds. Williams, meanwhile, contributed seven points and five boards to go along with four assists and six steals. As a team, CCNY shot 41 percent (25-of-61) from the field, 19 percent (4-of-21) from three-point land, and 82.4 percent (14-of-17) at the free throw line.
For the Scarlet Raptors, Destin had a double-double with 28 points and 17 rebounds. Arian Azemi finished with 17 points, eight boards and four assists, while Jake Petrick finished with 10 points and three assists. Ian McCarthy added eight rebounds and three assists for Rutgers-Camden, which shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from the floor. The Scarlet Raptors went 7-for-26 (26.9 percent) from long range an 8-for-16 (50 percent) at the charity stripe. Rutgers-Camden also held a 42-32 edge on the glass.
Up next for the Beavers is a 7 p.m. visit to Connecticut College (1-3) on Tuesday night.
