Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Maritime Holds Off CCNY, 82-72

THROGGS NECK, NY – The City College of New York men's basketball team continued its busy stretch of four games in eight days by visiting Maritime on Sunday afternoon.  Isaiah Denard (Staten Island, NY) had 21 points to lead four Beavers in double-figures, but CCNY (0-9) fell to the host Privateers (4-4) by an 82-72 count at Reisenberg Hall Gymnasium.

Denard tallied five rebounds and four assists to go along with his 21 points.  Daniel Piszczatowski (Middle Village, NY) finished with 16 points and 12 boards, and Yassine Sakhi (New York, NY) contributed 12 points.  Romello Rashad (New York, NY) added 11 points, while Isaiah Williams (Bronx, NY) distributed four assists.  As a team, the Beavers shot 53.7 percent (29-of-54) from the floor, 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from three-point land, and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) at the free throw line.

There were seven ties in the first 13 minutes of the game, as neither side was able to build a lead of more than four points in the first half.  Maritime's Jaylin Gray broke a 24-24 deadlock at the 6:37 mark, but Sakhi responded with a three-pointer on the other end to put CCNY in front, 27-26.  That started a 10-2 run for the Beavers, who extended their cushion to 34-28 on an Athanasios Kamberis (New Hyde Park, NY) foul shot with 3:21 left until halftime.  The Privateers scored seven of the next nine points, though, to get back within one at 36-35.

It looked like the Beavers would take a lead into the locker room when Denard went 1-for-2 at the free throw line with two seconds remaining.  However, Brendan McGovern was fouled while shooting a three as time expired, and he drained all three foul shots to give the Privateers the one-point halftime lead, 38-37.

CCNY went back in front on Piszczatowski's jumper to begin the second half before Maritime countered with a 7-2 spurt to take a 45-40 advantage.  The Beavers got back within two at 51-49 on an Austin Volkens (Brooklyn, NY) trey at the 15:21 mark, but the Privateers went on a 16-5 run over the next six minutes to open up a 67-54 cushion.

After CCNY cut its deficit to seven points at 69-62 on a Piszczatowski layup with 5:24 to go, Maritime used an 11-4 rally to open up its largest lead of the game, a 14-point, 80-66 margin with 2:26 remaining.  The Privateers ended up notching a 10-point win, 82-72, as Jonathan Suazo (Bronx, NY) capped the scoring with his first collegiate basket—a layup.

For Maritime, Brennan Whelan led the way with 21 points and five assists.  Sean Flynn registered 14 points and seven rebounds, and McGovern notched 12 points.  Gray, meanwhile, had 10 points to go along with five boards and five assists.  The Privateers outrebounded the Beavers 35-19 and shot 54.5 percent (30-of-55) from the field.  Maritime was 9-for-24 (37.5 percent) from long range and 13-for-14 (92.9 percent) at the charity stripe.

Up next, CCNY heads to Mitchell (1-6) on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. matchup.  It will be the Beavers' final game before a three-week break.
