YAPHANK, NY – The CCNY baseball program earned a split of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against the College of Staten Island to conclude the three-game CUNYAC series.
The Beavers opened the day with an 8-6 victory while the Dolphins claimed a 16-3 victory in the finale.
GAME 1: CCNY 8, Staten Island 6
Staten Island took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Three hits and one error in the inning helped the Dolphins plate two runs.
CSI added another run in the top of third, extending their lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the third, Sophomore
Michael Espinal helped the cut into the deficit, singling to center field for a two-run score. After a base hit from Josh Moren, sophomore
Hamley Volquez hit an RBI singled to left field to even the game at three runs apiece.
After a scoreless inning, CCNY drove in five runs in the run bottom fifth. Freshman
Josh Moreno brought home classmate
Alex Velazquez on an RBI sacrifice fly ball to take their first lead of the day, 4-3. An at-bat later, sophomore
Chris Moreno singled to left field, driving in two runs (6-3).
Moreno scored next as junior
Cooper York singled down the right-field line. The Beavers added an insurance run late in the inning when freshman
Ethan Angress stole home to put the Lavender & Black up 8-3.
Four hits in the top of the sixth, including a two-run homer, helped Staten Island put up three runs to bring the game within two, 8-6.
CCNY held off Staten Island from scoring any runs in the final innings to secure the victory.
Freshman
Peter Komaroski earned his first college win, tossing the first 5.2 innings, striking out four while allowing seven hits and six runs. Junior
Christian Barletta earned his second save of the season and the fifth of his career with the final 1.1 innings of work, allowing three hits.
At the plate, York recorded three hits, one run, and an RBI. Espinal two hits and knocked in two runs, Volquez had a pair of hits, two stolen bases one run, and an RBI while Moreno drove in two runs on one hit.
GAME 2: Staten Island 16, CCNY 3
In game two, the Dolphins collected 22 hits to help tally 16 runs.
Staten Island struck first with four runs in the first, five in the second and third, and two in the seventh inning.
CCNY got finally got on the board in the fifth frame. Sophomore
Christopher Martinez started off the inning with a base hit to centerfield for his first career hit. Freshman
Sean Riera nailed his first collegiate home run for a two score. Two at-bats later, York notched a solo home run to right field for the teams third run.
The Beavers will wrap up the weekend with a single-game against NYU tomorrow at MCU Park, with a 12:00 pm start time.
