Beavers Sweep Purchase On Saturday

PURCHASE, NY -- The City College of New York women's volleyball team recorded its first 3-0 sweep of the season on Saturday.  The Beavers (2-5) dominated offensively from the start, totaling 40 kills in the 25-16, 25-21, 25-14 victory over host the host Panthers (3-3) at Purchase College Gymnasium.

Nicole Polanco (West Haverstraw, NY) had a double-double for CCNY, finishing with 16 kills and 13 digs.  Rachel Ramirez (New York, NY) added 10 kills and seven digs, while Michelle Hu (Staten Island, NY) collected 11 digs and three service aces.  Dzeneta Harambasic (Ridgewood, NY) tallied eight digs and three aces to go along with 33 assists.  The Beavers hit .175 (40 kills, 22 errors, 103 attempts) as a team in the victory.

After a back-and-forth start, CCNY took control of the first set with a 14-4 run that turned a 5-3 deficit into a 17-9 advantage.  Purchase responded with five of the next seven points to get back within five, 19-14,  but the Beavers ended the frame on a 6-2 spurt to earn the 25-16 win.  Polanco closed out the set with kills on each of the final two points.

There were seven early ties in the second set before a Nadia Campoverde (Queens, NY) kill sparked a 4-0 CCNY rally that put the Beavers in front 10-7.  The Panthers battled back to tie the score at 20-20, but Polanco responded with back-to-back kills and Ramirez followed with a service ace that extended the cushion to 23-20.  CCNY took the set by a 25-21 count to go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, it was the Beavers who jumped out to the early lead.  CCNY opened up an 8-2 advantage on a kill by Ramirez before two Polanco kills increased the margin to 10-3.  After a Harmabasic ace made it 18-7 in favor of CCNY, Purchase countered with five of the next six points.  The Panthers would get no closer, though, as the Beavers rattled off four straight points to go up 23-12.  With the match-sealing 25-14 third-set triumph, CCNY earned its first 3-0 win since a victory over Medgar Evers on Oct. 11, 2018.

Joetta Francis paced the Panthers with seven kills, while Skyla Schoppmeyer had a team-high 11 digs.  Esmee Johns handed out 17 assists and added five digs.  As a team, Purchase was held to .058 (19-14-86) hitting in the match.

On Tuesday night, the Beavers return to action with a 7 p.m. matchup at Centenary (0-5).
