HACKETTSTOWN, NJ -- On the strength of a season-high 19 service aces, the City College of New York women's volleyball team earned its second consecutive victory on Tuesday night. It was also the second straight 3-0 sweep for the Beavers (3-5), who topped host Centenary (0-6) by a 25-18, 25-14, 25-18 count at Reeves Gymnasium.
After Centenary jumped out to an 11-7 advantage in the first set,
Dzeneta Harambasic (Ridgewood, NJ) slammed a kill to start a 6-1 rally that put the Beavers in front 13-12. The Cyclones regained the lead at 17-15, but CCNY responded with a 10-1 spurt to claim the set, 25-18. CCNY had five aces during the run, including three in a row by
Nicole Polanco (West Haverstraw, NY).
The Beavers' hot serving continued early in the second set. CCNY built an 8-3 lead, with four of those points coming on aces. The Cyclones pulled within two at 13-11 before another run of aces--four by
Kayla Oge (New City, NY)--extended the margin to 21-11. A
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) close out the frame, 25-14, as CCNY took a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, it was all CCNY. The Beavers scored the first five points of the stanza and led 14-5 before Centenary went on a 4-0 run to trim its deficit to 14-9. Polanco responed with a kill, though, as CCNY eventually pushed the margin back to seven points at 23-16.
Rachel Ramirez (New York, NY) smashed a kill to finish it, 25-18, giving the Beavers the 3-0 victory.
Polanco paced the Beavers offensively with 11 kills. She added 12 digs to complete the double-double while also notching four aces. Ramirez served five aces to go along with five kills, and Oge finished with seven aces. Harambasic, meanwhile, distributed 23 assists. CCNY hit a combined .120 (29 kills, 18 errors, 92 attempts) and outdug Centenary 42-38.
For the Cyclones, Brielle Gensinger had 11 digs, while Melissa Krueger collected nine digs to go along with three assists. Centenary held a 5-0 edge in blocks, with Emerald Richard recording three blocks and Leandra Garcia notching the other two. Storm Spooner tallied a team-high four kills, and Amelia Rodriguez handed out eight assists. Centenary was held to -.014 (14-15-73) hitting in the match.
CCNY will now have a week off before returning to action. The Beavers St. Joseph's Brooklyn (4-3) next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
