NEW YORK – The City College of New York men's basketball team returned home on Friday night for a CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) matchup with Brooklyn. Three Beavers scored in double-figures, but it wasn't enough, as the visiting Bulldogs (7-8, 4-1 CUNYAC) earned a 78-62 victory over CCNY (0-15, 0-6 CUNYAC) at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
Yassine Sakhi (New York, NY) and
Isaiah Denard (Staten Island, NY) led the Beavers with 16 points apiece. Sakhi also posted team-highs with nine rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Daniel Piszczatowski (Middle Village, NY) finished with 10 points and four blocks, while
Romello Rashad (New York, NY) notched nine points, six rebounds and five assists. CCNY shot 40 percent (20-of-50) from the field, 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from downtown, and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) at the free throw line.
A Sakhi jumper gave the Beavers an early 4-3 lead, but Brooklyn made each of its first four shots to open up a 10-6 advantage. A Denard trey pulled CCNY within one at 13-12 before the Bulldogs went on an 11-3 run to increase the margin to 24-15. However, after Denard's second three-pointer made it a six-point game, 24-18, with 7:41 left in the first half, Brooklyn closed the period on a 22-12 spurt to take a 46-30 cushion into the locker room.
CCNY opened the second half on a 12-2 rally and pulled within six, 48-42, on a Sakhi layup at the 16:48 mark. The Beavers would get no closer, though, as Brooklyn pushed their advantage to a game-high 22 points, 72-50, with 4:58 remaining. The final margin was 16 points, 78-62.
Jordan Wright had 14 points to pace Brooklyn. Michael Tesoriero finished with 12 points, five assists and four steals, while Noah Shy and Orri Cohen added 12 points apiece. Kayin Olajide handed out a game-high six assists, and Wendly Alce grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from the floor and held a 38-29 edge on the glass. Brooklyn was 11-for-28 (39.3 percent) from three-point land and 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) at the charity stripe.
Up next for the Beavers is a 7 p.m. showdown against Lehman (9-7, 4-2 CUNYAC) at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
