Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CCNY Falls at First-Place John Jay

NEW YORK – The City College of New York men's basketball team continued its four-game road trip on Tuesday night by visiting CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)-leading John Jay.  CCNY (1-19, 0-9 CUNYAC) got 20 points from Romello Rashad (New York, NY) and a double-double from Jonathan Suazo (Bronx, NY), but ultimately fell to the first-place Bloodhounds (16-5, 9-1 CUNYAC) by a 58-51 count at the Doghouse.

Rashad finished with nine rebounds to finish just shy of a double-double.  Suazo, meanwhile, made his first collegiate start and recorded career-highs with 12 points, 11 boards and three assists.  Yassine Sakhi (New York, NY) added 12 points for the Beavers, who shot 34 percent (18-of-53) from the field.  CCNY went 7-for-15 (46.7 percent) from three-point land and 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) at the free throw line.

CCNY held an early 5-3 lead before John Jay went on a 12-4 run to go in front 15-9.  After the Bloodhounds extended their advantage to 22-15, the Beavers scored five of the next seven points to make it 24-20.  However, John Jay's Jayson Brower sank a layup just before time expired to give his team a six-point cushion, 26-20, at the break.

After the Beavers pulled within three, 34-31, early in the second half, John Jay responded with a 6-0 spurt to open up its largest lead of the contest, 40-31, with 12:32 remaining.  CCNY again stormed back, trimming its deficit to four, 43-39, on a Daniel Piszczatowski (Middle Village, NY) free throw midway with 9:23 left.  The Beavers would get no closer, though, as John Jay held on for a 58-51 win.

Jayson Brower paced the Bloodhounds with 19 points, and he added six assists.  Kyle LaGuardia tallied 11 points and six rebounds, while Doug Levy contributed 12 boards, three assists and four blocks.  John Jay shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the floor and outrebounded CCNY 40-32.  The Bloodhounds were 5-for-19 (26.3 percent) from downtown and 9-for-16 (56.3 percent) at the charity stripe.

Up next for CCNY is a 7:15 p.m. matchup at Brooklyn (9-11, 6-4 CUNYAC) on Friday.  The Bulldogs earned a 78-62 victory over the Beavers at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Jan. 17.
