BROOKLYN, NY – After trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half, the City College of New York men's basketball team (2-19, 1-9 CUNY Athletic Conference) stormed back to earn a 69-65 win over Brooklyn (9-12, 6-5 CUNYAC) at West Quad Gymnasium on Friday night.
Yassine Sakhi (New York, NY) had 16 of his game-high 22 points during the Beavers' second-half run, as CCNY recorded its first road victory in just over a calendar year.
Brooklyn led 27-26 at halftime and extended that advantage to 47-37 with 12:20 remaining.
Romello Rashad (New York, NY) hit a layup on the other end, though, then a
Jonathan Suazo (Bronx, NY) layup cut CCNY's deficit to six points, 47-41, at the 11:29 mark.
A Suazo layup tied the game at 55-55 with 4:40 left before CCNY pulled ahead for good on Rashad's jumper with 4:11 to go. A Sakhi layup extended the margin to four points, but Brooklyn responded with a trey to get back within one, 59-58. However, Rashad drained a trey of his own, and Sakhi added two free throws to give the Beavers a six-point lead, 64-58, with 58 seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs still had a chance after Jordan Wright nailed a trey to make it a 68-65 game at the 11-second mark. With Brooklyn forced to foul, Sakhi went to the line and sank 1-of-2 free throws to make it a two-possession game. Brooklyn's three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short, and the Beavers earned the 69-65 win, their first road victory since an 83-77 triumph at York on Feb. 5, 2019.
Sakhi had nine rebounds and three assists to go along with his 22 points. Rashad finished with 15 points and seven boards, while
Daniel Piszczatowski (Middle Village, NY) registered 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Rashad added nine points, six boards and three assists in the victory. As a team, the Beavers shot 46 percent (23-of-50) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from three-point range, and 65.5 percent (19-of-29) at the charity stripe. CCNY also outrebounded Brooklyn 40-38.
CCNY started the game on a 7-2 run, but Brooklyn responded with a pair of three-pointers to go in front, 8-7. The Bulldogs opened up a 19-13 cushion midway through the first half before the Beavers went on a 12-0 spurt to take a 25-19 advantage with 4:52 left until halftime. However, Brooklyn ended the period by scoring eight of the final nine points and took a 27-26 edge into the locker room.
Anthony McClean tallied 18 points to pace the Bulldogs. He added three assists and three steals. Wright, meanwhile, notched 16 points, eight boards and six assists. Brooklyn shot a combined 34.8 percent (24-of-69) from the floor, 36 percent (9-of-36) from downtown, and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) at the free throw line.
On Monday night, the Beavers conclude their four-game road trip with an 8 p.m. visit to Medgar Evers (6-15, 3-7 CUNYAC). The Cougars defeated CCNY, 103-99 in overtime, at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Jan. 6.
