Beavers Swept By McDaniel In Twinbill

WESTMINSTER, MD – On Saturday afternoon, the City College of New York baseball team took on McDaniel in a doubleheader.  The Green Terror (7-2) won the opener by an 8-0 count, then earned a 5-3 victory over the Beavers (1-7) in game two at Preston Field.

CCNY was limited to just three hits—all singles—in game one by McDaniel starter Ryan Martino.  Martino got all the offense he needed in the bottom of the third, when the Green Terror put three runs on the board.  McDaniel added another run in the fifth, then notched a four-spot in the sixth to cap the scoring.  Martino gave up a one-out single to Griffin Bell (Ridge, NY) in the top of the seventh before inducing a double-play ball to finish off the shutout.

Stephen Peters (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Sean Riera (Miami, FL) had back-to-back singles in the fourth for CCNY's other two hits.  Starting pitcher Edgar Rodriguez (Bayside, NY) (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings.  He struck out three and walked three.  Jacob Schwartz (New York, NY) yielded four runs on two hits and two walks, while Trent Alfred (Springfield Gardens, NY) gave up three hits in the sixth.

McDaniel had 13 hits in the contest, with Billy Wheatley going 3-for-4 at the plate.  Kyle Petak finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Julian Jenkins went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Martino (3-0) struck out four and didn't walk a batter in the complete game victory.

In game two, the Beavers jumped ahead early with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first.  After Cooper York (Madison, WI) and Peters both singled, the runners moved to second and third on a Riera groundout.  Bell was up next, and he sent a grounder to second that was misplayed for a two-run error.  However, the Green Terror immediately struck back with five runs in their half of the inning.

It would stay that way until the top of the fourth, when CCNY put two runners on to start the inning after Alex Erwin (Aliso Viejo, CA) singled and John Creegan (Ramsey, NJ) was hit by a pitch.  The runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch before Erwin scored on Sardar Kahnbilvardi's (New City, NY) infield single.  The Beavers then loaded the bases with nobody out on a base hit by Ethan Angress (Mt. Sinai, NY).  CCNY would get no more, though, as McDaniel turned Josh Moreno's (Portland, OR) fly ball to right into a triple play, ending the inning and preserving the Green Terror's 5-3 lead, which would prove to be the final score.

Angress had two of CCNY's seven hits in the game, while Kahnbilvardi was credited with the Beavers' only RBI.  Starting pitcher Peter Komaroski (Jacksonville Beach, FL) took the loss after surrendering five runs (only one of which was earned) on six hits and seven walks in 4.1 innings.  Alfred tossed 0.2 innings of scoreless relief before Erwin pitched the sixth and was charged with a walk.

For the Green Terror, Jenkins led the way offensively by going 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored.  Jack Vener made the start on the mound and lasted three innings.  He allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits, struck out four and walked one.  Nathan Miller (1-0) yielded a hit and a walk over three innings of scoreless relief, while Jordan Rhodes recorded a strikeout during a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up the save.

The series concludes on Sunday with a single game at 12 p.m.  It will be the last of seven consecutive contests CCNY played in the State of Maryland.
