Beavers Drop Season Opener at Pratt

BROOKLYN, NY – The City College of New York women's volleyball team played its first match since the 2019 CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) semifinals on Saturday.  The Beavers (0-1), who return only one player from that roster, were unable to pick up their first win in 22 months, however, as Pratt (1-0) earned a 25-8, 25-15, 25-14 victory at the Pratt ARC.

Pratt jumped out to an early 11-5 advantage in the first set, then used a 13-2 run to increase its cushion to 24-7.  The Cannoneers ended up taking the opening frame by a 25-8 count.

After Pratt opened up a 14-5 cushion in the second set, the Beavers rattled off three straight points to pull within 14-8.  However, the Cannoneers responded with a 7-3 spurt to push their lead back to 10 points at 21-11.  Pratt won the set, 25-15, to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five match.

In the third set, the sides traded the first six points before Pratt used a 13-2 rally to go ahead 16-5.  After the Cannoneers increased the margin to 22-7, a kill by Natalia Abreu (Bronx, NY) sparked a 7-1 CCNY run that brought the Beavers within 23-14.  However, Pratt claimed the next two points to close out the set, 25-14, and the match, 3-0.

Abreu paced the Beavers with five kills.  Bianka Catral (Pomona, NY) added three kills and two service aces, while Anna Plotnick (Golden, CO) handed out seven assists to go along with six digs.  Viviana Alatorre (Bronx, NY) tallied a team-high 10 digs.

Olivia Julich had eight kills to lead the Cannoneers.  Josie Johnson and Rose Moon contributed seven kills apiece, and Deanna Colondona registered a team-best nine digs while also serving three aces.  Hannah Leitten and Avery Toomes shared the setting duties, with Leitten distributing 19 assists and Toomes notching 11 helpers.  Pratt hit .392 (41 kills, 10 errors, 79 attempts) as a team and outdug the Beavers 40-26.

CCNY returns to action on Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. matchup at NJCU (1-0).
