Bronxville, NY - The City College of New York men's volleyball program opened their 2022 season Thursday evening, defeating Sarah Lawrence College in four sets (18-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19).
The Beavers had a slow start in the opening set, dropping a 25-18 decision to the Gryphons. The Beavers knocked off the rust in the second set, muscling out a 25-21 set victory. CCNY played another tight set in the third frame but came out with a 25-10 set victory. The Beavers finished out the match in the fourth set, pulling out a 25-19 victory.
The Freshman duo of
Utpal Chand and
Rahul Sharma powered the Beavers, recording double-doubles in their debut for CCNY. Chand had a team-high 13 kills and 24 digs, while Sharma totaled 12 kills, 14 digs, along with three blocks. Freshman
Tenzin Tsepak threw down eight kills, adding four aces and one block. Freshman
Reng Chen followed with four kills, 12 digs, and four aces. Freshman
Edwin Fierros Gaytan added a game-high 27 assists to go with seven digs.
Next, the Beavers will travel to Riverdale, NY, on Tuesday, Feb. 8, to take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 7:00 p.m.
