CCNY Men's Basketball Season Comes to a Close in CUNYAC Quarterfinals; Falls to York, 76-68

Jamaica, NY - The City College of New York men's basketball team's season came to a close on Sunday afternoon, falling to the No. 3 seeded York College Cardinals in the 2022 CUNY Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinals, 76-68.

Sophomore Yassine Sakhi posted 19 points, four rebounds, dished out four assists, and had two steals. Junior Dashaun Galloway finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Sophomore Amir Assani collected 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Freshman Luqman Ahmed netted 11 points, along with two rebounds and two assists off the bench. Freshman Bayame Bah had four points, five rebounds, and two blocks. Rookie Elijah Patterson finished with eight rebounds, two steals, and two points.

Both teams played a tightly contested game in the first half, with neither team leading by more than four points through the first 18 minutes of the half. A jumper by York's Quran Dubin gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the half (36-30) with 1:33 left. 

The Beavers started the second half with a 4-0 run, taking a one-point lead (39-38). With the game tied at 45-45 with under 16 minutes, a pair of baskets from Sakhi and a three-pointer from Ahmed fueled a 7-4 run, building a three-point cushion (52-49) with 13:30 left.

After a pair of free throws by Sakhi put the Beavers up by four (56-52), the Cardinals scored seven unanswered points to take a three-point lead (59-56) over the Beavers. The Cardinals were able to hold off the Beavers, outscoring CCNY 20-9 in the stretch of the game.

The Beavers won the rebounding battle, outrebounding York 42-36, while the Cardinals outshot CCNY 44.1%- 40.3%.

The Beavers finish the 2021-22 campaign with a 7-17 overall mark.
