Flemington, NJ - The City College of New York baseball team wrapped up their five-game weekend road trip on Sunday, splitting a pair of games against the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Beavers took the opener, 6-4, and dropped to the Dolphins in game two, 9-3. The Beavers wrap up the weekend, standing at 2-5 overall on the season.
Game One: CCNY 6, CMSV 4
The Beavers got things going in the first inning. Xavier Grobbel scored the first run for CCNY on Jonathan Rivera's RBI sacrifice fly-out to get to go ahead 1-0. The Dolphins evened the contest in the bottom of the first, as an error led Matt DiNorcia to score an unearned run to tie the game.
In the second, catcher Justin Hernandez flied out to centerfield to score Tyler DiBlasi and give CCNY a 2-1 lead. Two at-bats later, John Creegan singled to left field to plate Brandon Paider and extend CCNY's lead to 3-0.
Ethan Angress lead off the third inning, batting his first career home run to grow the Beaver's lead to 4-1 over the Dolphins.
The Dolphins answered back in the fourth, as DiNorcia scored his second run of the game and tacked on two more runs in the fifth on two hits to knot the game at four runs apiece.
After Eric Romero reached first on a fielding error in the sixth, Hernandez slapped a homer to left-center for the two-run score, lifting the Beavers to a 6-4 advantage
James Dean Johnstone earned the victory, throwing a complete game on the mound to improve to 2-0 on the season. In seven innings of work, Johnstone pitched four scoreless frames and allowed just five hits, recording a seven-high seven strikeouts.
Game Two: CMSV 9, CCNY 3
The Dolphins scored the game's first run in the opening frame, plating a run on an RBI sacrifice fly-ball.
In the second, the Dolphins came alive, scoring seven runs on six hits and two errors to go-ahead 8-0. The Dolphins tallied their ninth run in the bottom of the third on Engers Marte's solo home run.
After four scoreless innings, CCNY got on the boards with a pair of runs in the fifth. After Jason Rodriguez drew a walk with two outs to get on base, Stephen Suprun doubled to left center, moving to Rodriguez to third. With Grobel at the plate, Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch to give CCNY their first run. Suprun scored the second run for the Beavers, reaching home on a fielding error.
The Beavers scored their third and final run in their seventh inning when Austin Ortiz singled to right field to score Grobbel.
Eric Romero (1-1) took the loss, throwing two innings. Eamon Burke worked the next two frames, striking out one and allowing no hits or runs. Jason Rodriguez threw the final two innings, striking out four batters.
The Beavers will return to action on Friday, Mar. 11, with a non-conference matchup at Mount Saint Mary College at 4:00 p.m.
