New Rochelle, NY - In a back and forth affair, The City College of New York men's lacrosse team took on Iona College on Sunday evening, dropping a heartbreaker in overtime, 9-8.
In the opening quarter, Iona struck first to take a 1-0 lead. The Beavers rounded out the quarter, tying the contest, 2-2. CCNY outscored the Gaels in the second frame, holding a 5-3 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Gaels responded with strong offense play, outscoring the Beavers 4-1 to regain the lead midway through the fourth quarter, 7-6.
With under six minutes to play in regulations, CCNY rallied to net two goals, capturing the lead (8-7) with under a minute to play. In the final seconds of the quarter, Iona found the back of the net after a barrage of offensive attacks evening the game (8-8), forcing overtime.
In the overtime period, CCNY won the opening faceoff, but a turnover by the Beavers gave Iona possession, allowing Teige O'Brien to thread a pass to John Stivala, who netted the game-winning goal.
Eric Giannaris led CCNY with four goals and an assist and won 11-of-14 faceoffs.
Tyler Miller found the back of the net twice and tallied an assist, while
Julian Lam scored two goals.
Carlos Cruz-Perez recorded a goal and an assist and won all six of his faceoffs.
Peter Giannaris also dished assist.
Maximus Czernisz anchored the defense in goal, recording a career-high 13 saves.
Next, the Beavers travel across town to take on Columbia University on Saturday, Apr. 16, at 7:00 p.m.
