Bronx, NY - The City College of New York baseball team earned a pair of wins on Saturday, defeating Lehman College at home in a CUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Beavers took game one, 7-3, and rallied strongly with an 8-7 victory in game two. CCNY improves to 5-21 overall and 3-7 in conference play with the win.
Game One - CCNY 7, Lehman 3
Lehman struck first in the top of the second frame, scoring two runs on Erik Then's two-RBI double.
In the fourth, CCNY got on the boards when Angel Vega drew an RBI walk to plate Michael Chasanov for the Beaver's first run. With one out, Ethan Angress dialed up a three-RBI triple to lift the Beavers to a 4-2 lead. John Creegan drove Angress on an RBI groundout, boosting CCNY's advantage, 5-2.
Lehman drove in another run on Ranssel Pinedo's RBI single to shave CCNY's lead to two runs, 5-3.
The Beavers added two more insurance runs in the sixth inning. After Angress started the frame off with a base hit, Creegan drove Angress in on an RBI double. Chasanov drove in Creegan on an RBI single with two outs, growing their lead to 7-3.
Freshman James Dean Johnstone earned the win on the mound, improving to 4-3 on the season. He worked 6.0 innings, striking out seven batters while allowing three runs on seven hits. Brandon Paider closed the game in the seventh inning, striking out three and allowing one hit.
Game Two - CCNY 8, Lehman 7
With one out in the bottom of the third, Austin Ortiz drew an RBI walk with bases loaded, bringing in Angel Vega for the team's first run of the day.
CCNY struck again in the fourth. John Creegan ripped an RBI single to right field with two outs to score Stephen Suprun, cutting the Lightning's lead in half, 4-2. Capitalizing on the momentum, Jonathan Rivera followed with a three-RBI inside the park home run to left field, handing the Beavers the lead, 5-4.
Lehman evened the game in the fifth, as Ranssell Pinedo scored an unearned run on a fielding error. Lehman regained the lead in the sixth frame, adding runs on Jeremy Santos's RBI single and Pinedo's RBI double, giving the Lightning a 7-5 advantage.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Ortiz nailed a two-RBI double center field to tie the game, 7-7. In the next at-bat, Michael Chasanov followed with an RBI single up the middle to drive in Ortiz, recapturing the lead for the Beavers, 8-7.
In game two, Rivera went a stellar 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs, and a stolen base in the win. Creegan drove in a pair and scored twice while hitting 2-for-3. Ortiz finished 1-for-3, tallying three RBIs and a run. Vega was 1-for-2 at the plate, scoring two runs, while Chasanov added a hit and RBI.
CCNY held off Lehman in the final inning as freshman right-handed pitcher Brandon Paider earned his first career win, throwing 4.1 innings in relief. He struck out three batters while allowing just three runs on six hits in the winning effort.
