Brooklyn, NY - In game one of the 2022 CUNY Athletic Conference Championship series, The City College of New York baseball team fell short, falling to Baruch College, 14-13, on Friday.
Baruch opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single by Joseph Cocozza.
CCNY responded quickly with a pair of runs in the second inning when
John Creegan knocked a two-RBI base hit to the left-center to put the Beavers ahead.
Baruch retook the lead in the third frame on a pair of RBI sacrifice flyballs, taking a 3-2 advantage over the Beavers.
CCNY evened the contest in the top of the fifth when
Michael Chasanov drove in Creegan on an RBI single to left field, 3-3. An RBI double by
Tyler DiBlasi lifted the Beavers to a 4-2 lead.
In the seventh, DiBlasi tacked on two more runs for CCNY on a two-RBI triple to center field. DiBlasi scored the inning's final run on
Angel Vega's RBI groundout, boosting the team to a 6-3 advantage.
Trailing by four runs, Baruch rallied in the eighth inning, producing eight runs in the frame to jump out to a 10-7 lead.
The Beavers answered back in the ninth with a monstrous rally of their own, tallying six runs. Vega drove in the first run on an RBI walk with bases loaded. Suprun connected next with an RBI single up the middle, cutting the Bearcat's lead to one run, 10-9. A fielding error by the Bearcats aided Vega and
Sardar Khanbilvardi to reach home, regaining the lead, 11-10. Another error allowed
Ethan Angress and Suprun to reach home, extending the Beaver's lead, 13-10.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Bearcats tallied four runs on two hits, pulling off a comeback to take game one of the series, 14-13.
DiBlasi led CCNY at the plate, going 3-for-6, with three RBIs and a run. Chasanov finished 2-for-4, tallying two runs and an RBI.
Austin Ortiz ended the day 2-for-4 with a trio of runs.
CCNY looks to bounce back Sunday for game two of the series. Games two and three of the series will be moved to Sunday at Maimonides Park. Game times will be announced.
