New Haven, Conn. - The City College of New York women's soccer team opened the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon, battling to a 3-3 draw against Albertus Magnus College. (A new NCAA rule has eliminated overtime from regular-season matches.)
The Falcons and Beavers were aggressive offensively to open the match, with both teams trading shots to start the contest. Albertus Magnus struck first, as Haley Montesanto tallied the first goal of the game for the Falcons in the 27th minute.
In the first half's final minute of play (44:21), sophomore Laura Villatoro netted the Beaver's first goal of the day, tying the contest heading into halftime.
In the second half, junior Nicole Magretta found the back of the net in the 56th minute, lifting CCNY to a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Mackenzie Moreno made her presence felt moments later (61:30), booting in the Beaver's third goal off an aided assist from sophomore Julia Anszelowicz to take a 3-1 lead over the Falcons.
At the 72nd mark, Albertus Magnus closed the margin when Emmalee Ianniello netted an assisted goal to cut CCNY's lead to 3-2 with 17 minutes remaining in regulation. Holding onto their momentum, Tyler Stocking led the charge for the Falcons in the 78th minute, nailing the equalizer to even the contest, 3-3.
With 12 minutes remaining, neither team could for the go-ahead goal, ending the match in a 3-3 draw.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Amelia Cataldo started for the Beavers in goal, making a match-high eight saves while facing 11 shots.
The Beavers return to action next weekend when they travel to take on St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 5:30 p.m.
