New York, NY - The City College of New York men's basketball team left no one unentertained in front of a jammed-packed crowd at the Nat Holman Gymnasium Saturday afternoon, defeating John Jay College, 98-75, in the First Round of the 2022-23 CUNY Athletic Conference Basketball Championships.
With the victory, the Beavers improve to 17-9 overall, their highest win total since the 2016-17 season, and ties for the second-most victories in a single season, behind CCNY's 1949-50 NCAA and NIT Championship team (24-5).
Senior
Dashaun Galloway posted his first career triple-double, finishing with 12 points, ten rebounds, 15 assists, and seven steals. With his performance, Galloway engraves his name into the CUNYAC Tournament record books, tying the single-game record for assists. He also is now tied for the third-most steals in a single tournament game.
Freshman
Ricardo Dixon delivered a game-high 22 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists. Junior
Johnathan Blumrick netted a season-high 16 points, connecting a flawless 6-for-6 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Blumrick also had a season-high seven rebounds and two blocks. Junior
Yassine Sakhi finished with 16 points, four rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Senior
Daniel Piszczatowski tallied 15 points, three rebounds, and four assists.
Sophomore
Elijah Patterson added eight points, and three rebounds, while
Michael Bowman had four points.
The Beavers started the game hot, with Dixon accounting for 11 out of CCNY's first 15 points. CCNY built up a 12-point cushion with 13:27 to go in the half.
Behind an 11-2 run, the Bloodhounds pulled the game within three points (24-21). A three-pointer by Adrian Kopec helped John Jay even the game at 24-24 with 7:47 to go in the half.
The Beavers answered back with eight straight points in the paint to build up a six-point lead with 4:47 to go. The Beavers closed out the half strong with a 15-5 scoring run to lead the Bloodhounds heading into halftime, 48-32.
In the second half, CCNY controlled the floor, shooting the Bloodhounds 61.8 percent in the half. The Beavers led by as much as 36 points (92-56) with 4:23 remaining in the game.
Next, CCNY advances to the semifinals of the CUNYAC Men's Basketball Championships. The Beavers will travel to the No. 2 seeded Lehman College Lightning on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7:00 p.m.
