Beavers Advance to CUNYAC Championship Game For Second Consecutive Season

Bronx, NY - The City College of New York baseball team is heading back to the CUNY Athletic Conference Championship Game after defeating John Jay College, 15-3, in the First Round on Tuesday. With the victory, the Beavers improve to 14-18 overall. CCNY will make their second consecutive appearance in the CUNYAC Championship Game.

The Beavers had an offensive field day, stacking up 12 hits and a season-high 14 RBI on the afternoon. Jonathan Rivera powered the Beavers at the plate, finishing the day hitting for a complete cycle and went 5-for-5 with 5 RBIs and three runs in the victory. Senior Ethan Angress had a solid outing going 3-for-6 in the game with three RBI and two runs. Sophomore Tyler DiBlasi went 2-for-2, drawing two walks with two runs and an RBI.

CCNY jumped on the board first as John Creegan scored the game's first run on Michael Chasoanov's RBI fielder choice.

An inning later, John Jay would even the score on an RBI base hit from Joe Salerno.

In the third inning, the Beavers exploded with four runs. With one out, Rivera launched a two-RBI single to center field, putting the Beavers up 3-1. With bases loaded, third basemen Stephen Suprun drew an RBI walk. Rightfielder Tyler DiBlasi drove in the final run on an RBI walk to lift CCNY to a 5-1 lead.

In the fourth, Rivera brought in the first run on an RBI triple to left center. An at-bat later, Chasoanov drove in another run on an RBI sac fly. Suprun piled on the final two runs of the frame on a two-run homer to right field, extending the Beaver's lead to 9-1.

Rivera added three more runs for CCNY in the fifth frame, blasting a three-run homer to left field, pushing their lead to 12-1. With bases loaded in the sixth, Ethan Angress drove in the final three runs on a three-RBI triple to center field.

James Dean Johnstone started on the rubber for the Beavers and gave 4.0 strong innings of work, allowing just one run, two hits, and striking out seven. Brandon Paider worked the next 3.0 inning, striking out four. Jose Colon and Jason Rodriguez closed the game on the mound, with Rodriguez recording a season-high three strikeouts.

Next, CCNY will take on Lehman College in a Championship best-of-three series at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn, NY. Games one and two of the series will occur on Friday, May 12, starting at noon.
