New York, NY - In their 2023 home opener, The City College of New York women's volleyball team earned a four-set victory (15-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-19) against St. Joseph's University Brooklyn on Tuesday evening at the Nat Holman Gymnasium. With the win, the Beavers improve to 2-3 on the season.
St. Joe's got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 12-4 lead. The Beavers narrowed the Bears lead to four points with a 6-2 run. St. Joe's controlled the remainder of the frame, outscoring CCNY 11-5 to close the set. In the second set, CCNY built up a nine-point cushion, 15-6, to start out the match. Four straight kills by Bianka Catral helped propel the Beavers to a 25-13 win. The Beavers pulled away late in the third frame, taking the set 25-20. In the final set, CCNY outscored St. Joe's 25-19 to secure the match.
Junior Bianka Catral finished the night with a match-high 16 kills, setting a new season-high. Junior Arianna Rivas reached a double-double, collecting a season-high 10 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Junior Serena Warner tallied five blocks and two kills.
Junior Viviana Alatorre dished a career-high 35 assists, along with six digs, five aces, and two kills. Rookie Rosalynda Russo tallied 20 digs, matching her season-high. Sophomore Fatimah Coppin added six kills, six digs, and three aces, while sophomore Nila Tom added a season-high six kills.
Next, the Beavers travel across town to Throggs Necks, NY, to take on Maritime College on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7:00 p.m.
