Brooklyn, NY - The City College of New York baseball program's championship run came to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling to third-seeded John Jay College in the 2024 CUNYAC Championship Series. The Beavers fell to the Bloodhounds in game one, 6-1, before a late-game comeback fell short in game two, 5-4.
Game 1 - John Jay 6, CCNY 1
Junior Brandon Paider recorded two of his six strikeouts across the first five innings, allowing three hits.
The Bloodhounds broke the stalemate with four runs in the top of the sixth inning on five hits, 4-0.
John Jay extended their lead in the top of the eight, delivering runs on Quetin Bowman's RBI base hit to right field and Alex Kappes III's RBI fielder's choice to take a 6-0 lead.
The Beavers tallied their first run of the day in the bottom of the eight on freshman Colin Souther's RBI sac fly, scoring sophomore Rich Cirigliano, 6-1.
Junior first baseman Michael Chasanov went 3-for-4 in the opener.
Game 2 - John Jay 5, CCNY 4
In game two, CCNY struck first in the top of the second inning, with junior Stephen Suprun driving in Michael Chasanov on an RBI groundout.
After four scoreless innings, John Jay answered at the bottom of the seventh. With bases loaded, Santo Anzalone lifted the Bloodhounds to a 4-1 lead with a four-run homer to left-center, 4-1.
In the eighth inning, a two-run single to left field by Chasanov helped CCNY trim the lead to one, 4-3.
The Bloodhounds added another run in the eighth on Isaac Salazar's single to center field, 5-3.
With two outs in the ninth, Casanova stepped up again, bringing the game within one run, 5-4, with an RBI single through the right side, scoring senior Tyler DiBlasi.
Chasanov finished the game 3-for-4, tallying three RBI and one run. DiBlasi went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Sophomore Erik Rank allowed four runs on six hits in 6.2 innings in, taking the loss for CCNY. Austin Ortiz pitched 1.1 innings, giving up a run on two hits while striking out two.
CCNY finished the season with a 14-21 overall record.
