Throggs, NY - The City College of New York baseball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the 2025 CUNY Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Series. The Beavers took down Baruch College in the game, 5-3, and fell in game two, 9-4.
Game 1 - CCNY 5, Baruch 3
Baruch got off to a strong start, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Roy Longarzo walked, stole second, and was driven in by a Peter Marino single. Marino later scored on a passed ball, giving Baruch a 2–0 lead.
CCNY answered quickly in the bottom of the second. Freshman Gerard Molinaro launched a two-run homer to right field, tying the game. In the third, CCNY pulled ahead when senior Mike Savino singled, stole second, and scored on a double by freshman Demetri Zirogiannis, making it 3–2.
Baruch managed to even the score in the seventh inning when Matthew Rappa was hit by a pitch and later scored on a double by Longarzo.
The game was ultimately decided in the bottom of the seventh. After Molinaro doubled and freshman Jason Roser walked, Savino came through with a clutch two-run double to right field, giving CCNY a 5–3 lead. Baruch was unable to mount a comeback in the final two innings, despite getting runners into scoring position.
CCNY's starting pitcher Erik Rank earned the win, improving to 7–1 on the season with eight strong innings, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out five. Senior Brandon Paider was credited with the save, working the final inning.
Molinaro and Savino led CCNY offensively, each driving in two runs with two hits, while junior Kevin Budzinski also had two hits. Senior Michael Chasanov and Zirogiannis each had added a hit.
Game 2 - Baruch 9, CCNY 4
Baruch bounced back in the second game of their doubleheader with a 9–4 win over. After four scoreless innings, Baruch broke through in the 5th when Roy Longarzo blasted a three-run homer to right field. They added three more runs in the 6th, highlighted by RBI singles from Andrew DeRose and Matthew Rappa, and an RBI walk from Longarzo, pushing the lead to 6–0.
Baruch continued to add runs with a solo homer by Joseph Cocozza in the 7th and two more insurance runs in the 8th, including an RBI single by Peter Marino.
CCNY mounted a late rally in the ninth, scoring four runs on a two-RBI double from freshman Demetri Zirogiannis followed by a two-run homer by sophomore Jake Brenner.
The Beavers will close out the championship series tomorrow afternoon against Baruch in game three. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
