NEW YORK, N.Y. – One match stands between The City College of New York women's soccer team and a championship finish to its 2026 campaign. For the second consecutive season, the Beavers will face John Jay College in the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Women's Soccer Championship Game on Saturday, November 7, at 1:30 p.m. at York College.
The top-seeded Beavers earned their place in the championship game with a commanding 6-0 victory over fourth-seeded Lehman College in Saturday's semifinal at Randall's Island. Second-seeded and defending champion John Jay secured its return to the final with an identical 6-0 shutout victory over third-seeded Brooklyn College.
The matchup sets up a highly anticipated championship rematch, with CCNY looking to avenge last season's 3-0 championship loss to the Bloodhounds. The Beavers, however, enter Saturday's contest with confidence after earning a 1-0 regular-season victory over John Jay earlier this season.
BEAVERS DELIVER DOMINANT SEMIFINAL PERFORMANCE
CCNY (8-5-0) put together one of its most complete performances of the season against Lehman, controlling the match from the opening whistle. The Beavers outshot the Lightning 34-1, including a commanding 19-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Freshman Josoniah Terry opened the scoring in the 24th minute, giving CCNY an early advantage. Yessenia Yascaribay doubled the lead in the 42nd minute off an assist from Pamela Pineda, sending the Beavers into halftime ahead 2-0.
The offensive momentum continued immediately after the break, as Sara Dos Santos found the back of the net just 23 seconds into the second half. Sara Rodriguez added another goal in the 57th minute, followed by Valeria Diaz in the 73rd minute. Pamela Pineda capped the scoring in the 79th minute, converting a pass from Terry to complete the 6-0 victory.
Terry and Pamela Pineda each finished with a goal and an assist, while Karen Pineda led the Beavers with seven shots. Goalkeeper Jade Salas recorded one save before Elsa Gashi also saw action to help preserve the combined shutout.
The victory marked CCNY's second consecutive appearance in the CUNYAC Championship Game and continued the momentum from its regular-season conference championship.
JOHN JAY RETURNS TO DEFEND ITS CROWN
John Jay (7-7-1) enters the championship game seeking its second consecutive conference title and eighth straight appearance in the CUNYAC final.
The Bloodhounds showcased their offensive firepower in a 6-0 semifinal victory over Brooklyn College. Ava Lopez opened the scoring in the seventh minute off assists from Sofia Soler and Natalie Mack before adding her second goal in the 17th minute. Mack extended the advantage with a goal in the 31st minute, giving John Jay a 3-0 halftime lead.
Mack added her second goal of the afternoon in the 63rd minute off a Soler assist before Annmarie Russo and Bella Steele found the net in the 67th and 74th minutes, respectively.
Mack led the offensive effort with two goals and two assists, while Soler contributed two assists. John Jay finished with an 18-8 advantage in shots and an 11-6 edge in shots on goal. Anina Gut recorded four saves, while Gianna Duarte added two as the Bloodhounds combined for the shutout.
The Bloodhounds have demonstrated their ability to produce offensively throughout the postseason, setting up an intriguing matchup against a CCNY defense that limited Lehman to just one shot in the semifinals.
NEWMAN NAMED CUNYAC COACH OF THE YEAR
Adding to an already memorable season, CCNY head coach Yanique Newman has been named the 2026 CUNYAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year. The honor comes in Newman's second season leading her alma mater and marks the first time a CCNY coach has received the award since 2023.
Newman also makes history as the first former CUNYAC Women's Soccer Player of the Year to earn the conference's Coach of the Year distinction. She was previously recognized as the league's top player in 2014 during her collegiate career at CCNY.
Under Newman's leadership, the Beavers captured the 2026 CUNYAC regular-season championship, finishing conference play with a perfect 4-0 record while compiling an 8-5 overall mark. She has also guided CCNY to its second consecutive appearance in the CUNYAC Championship Game.
The program's success has been reflected in its individual recognition, as six Beavers earned 2026 CUNYAC Women's Soccer All-Conference honors, the most of any team in the conference.
Newman's recognition highlights the continued progress of the CCNY women's soccer program and provides another milestone as the Beavers prepare for Saturday's championship showdown.
A CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH WITH EVERYTHING ON THE LINE
Saturday's championship will mark the second consecutive season CCNY and John Jay have squared off for the conference crown. John Jay claimed last year's championship with a 3-0 victory, but the Beavers have already demonstrated their ability to defeat the defending champions, earning a hard-fought 1-0 win during the 2026 regular season.
With both teams coming off convincing semifinal victories, Saturday's contest promises to be a competitive battle between two programs looking to finish their seasons at the top of the conference.
For CCNY, the opportunity is clear: build on a conference regular-season championship, carry its semifinal momentum into the final, and bring the CUNYAC tournament trophy back to City College for the first time since 2023.
The Beavers are 90 minutes away from accomplishing that goal.
