Strong Showing for Fencing at Matt Lampell Invitational

The City College of New York women's fencing team had a strong showing at the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational hosted by Vassar College. They went 3-3 on the day, but put up a great performance. The defeated Long Island Post, Marist and Yeshiva and fell to Queens College, Vassar and Drew.

Klarissa Armada went a perfect 18-0 on the day to help the Beavers pick up some big points. Both Anna Kornak and Judine Watkis went 15-3 in epee on the day.

Round One (vs. Queens College)
The start of the meet was tough as the Queens took a big 9-0 lead in the sabre. Klarissa Armada started her day off 3-0, while Angela Cheung went 2-1 to defeat Queens 5-4 in foil. Watkis and Kornak both went 2-1 in epee against Queens. City fell 9-18 to Queens College.

Round Two (vs. LIU Post)
With round one behind them, City quickly turned the meet around during their matchup against LIU Post. Domica Roberts went 3-0 in sabre, while Sandra Lin went 2-1. Miriam Moran went 1-2 in sabre for CCNY to take a 6-3 lead. 

Angela Cheung went 2-1, while Maria Candela went 1-2 and Armada continued her perfect day going 3-0 in foil. After foil, City had a 9-6 lead. 

Both Kornak and Watkis swept their opponents 3-0 to put the Beavers up 6-3 in epee. City took the match against LIU Post 12-6.

Round Four (vs. Marist) 
Roberts continued to take advantage in sabre and went 2-1 against Marist. Both Lin and Moran went 1-2 as Marist took a 5-4 win in sabre. 

Armada and Cheung swept their opponents in foil, while Candela went 1-2 for the Beavers to win foil 7-2. 

Watkis was a perfect 3-0 in epee, while Kornak fell in one match. City took the match against Marist 16-10.

Round Five (vs. Yeshiva)
Lin was a perfect 3-0 against the Macabees, while Roberts fell in just one matchup. City won sabre 5-4. 

Just like in round four, Armada and Cheung swept their opponents 3-0 in foil. 

Watkis and Kornak followed in their teammates footsteps and swept Yeshiva in epee. CCNY defeated Yeshiva 17-10.

Round Six (vs. Vassar)
City was unable to come up with any victories against Vassar in sabre.

Armada continued her perfect day going 3-0 against a tough Vassar opponent. Cheung went 2-1 in foil. 

Kornak went 2-1, while Watkis went 1-2 in epee, but it was not enough and Vassar took the match 20-7.

Round Seven (vs. Drew)
As it was in round six, round seven looked similar for the sabre group. City was unable to gain an advantage and fell 9-0 in sabre.

Armada finished her day with a 3-0 sweep to go the day undefeated. Cheung went 1-2 in foil. 

Both Kornak and Watkis, like Armada, swept Drew 3-0. While, it was a close matchup, Drew took the match 17-16. 

Up next for the Beavers is the NIWFA Christmas Invitational on Sunday, December 6.
