NEW YORK – On Sunday, the City College of New York women's fencing team participated in the annual EWFC Team/Individual Championships at the Hunter College Sportsplex. The Beavers placed sixth out of eight teams in the competition after posting a 2-5 record at the event.
CCNY drew a tough assignment in its first bout, eventual champion Johns Hopkins. The Beavers dropped a 27-0 decision to the Blue Jays, who would go 7-0 in the competition. After falling to Drew (17-10), Vassar (22-5) and Stevens (27-0), CCNY earned its first victory of the day with a 21-6 triumph over Yeshiva. The Beavers then lost to Haverford by a 20-7 score before concluding the event with a 16-11 victory over Hunter.
The foil squad was CCNY's most successful unit, combining for 17 wins on the day.
April Vargas (Brooklyn, NY) and
Yanelle Serrano (Bronx, NY) both won six bouts, while
Ran Liu (New York, NY) registered five victories. In sabre competition,
Nathalie Ceballos (New York, NY) and
Catherine Langkamp (Bronx, NY) each picked up five wins, and
Lia Castillo (Bronx, NY) earned four wins.
Katherine Scardino (Rochester, NY), meanwhile, secured three victories with the epee.
By finishing among the top 16 fencers in their given weapon during the team competition, four Beavers qualified for the single-elimination individual tournament. Ceballos and Langkamp made the individual field with the sabre, while Vargas and Serrano reached the foil tournament.
Serrano fell to Erika Wong of Johns Hopkins by a 5-2 count, while Vargas suffered a 5-1 loss to Vassar's Zoe Tolbert. Ceballos and Langkamp both dropped their round of 16 bouts by a score of 5-1. Langkamp's opponent was Christine Drobish of Stevens, and Ceballos took on Erin Chan of Johns Hopkins.
