NEW YORK – City College of New York women's track & field star
Avery Maillet (New York, N.Y.) has been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America Team for the 2020 indoor season. She was honored in the 200 meters and long jump. Maillet qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in both events.
Ordinarily, All-Americans are chosen based on their performance at the NCAA Championships. However, since the meet was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the USTFCCCA Executive Committee made the decision to declare all student-athletes who had qualified as All-Americans. As a result, 675 student-athletes from 161 different schools were recognized.
"I think this is a great gesture towards all of those track & field athletes who didn't get a chance to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships," CCNY Director of Cross Country and Track & Field
Demetrius Murray said. "We will never know how that competition would've played out and who would have emerged as an All-American. I'm so proud of Avery. She definitely deserves this honor, as do all of the other athletes involved."
Maillet was due to make her second straight NCAA Indoor Championships appearance in the long jump. She had qualified ninth overall with a leap of 5.67 meters (18 feet, 7¼ inches) at the Princeton Indoor Invitational on Feb. 23. Her winning effort of 25.49 seconds in the 200 at the ECAC Indoor Championships on March 7, meanwhile, was the 16
th-best time in the NCAA this season.
"It's such an honor to be recognized as an All-American," Maillet said. "I can't say I wasn't ready to perform and set a new best for myself in both events, but considering the circumstances, I couldn't be happier. It's nice to see the USTFCCCA recognizing the athletes who made it to Nationals. The season didn't end the way we wanted it to, but it's amazing to have walked away with this accolade!"
These are the second and third All-America selections of her career. Maillet was an outdoor All-American in 2019, when she placed eighth in the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She was also an Academic All-American last year.
