CCNY Women's Track & Field Opens Indoor Season at the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational

Staten Island, NY - The City College of New York women's track & field team opened the 2025–26 indoor season Saturday at the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational in Staten Island, hosted by St. John's University at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex.

Freshman sprinter Mikelena Bouzy paced the team in the short sprints, finishing 35th in the 60m with a time of 8.52 before returning for a strong performance in the 200m, where she clocked 28.36, marking CCNY's best sprint result of the day. Fellow newcomers Victoria Pena (8.91), Hailey Thomas (9.33), and Ivanna Zamora-Sanchez (9.41) rounded out the 60m squad, giving CCNY four sub-10-second openers to start the season. All four also returned for the 200m, where Pena ran 30.96, Zamora-Sanchez posted 31.27, and first-years Hannah Tien (31.47) and Fahmida Choudhury (31.76) added to the depth of the sprinting unit.

In the mid-distance events, Tien, Zamora-Sanchez, and Choudhury delivered competitive early results in the 400m, finishing within two seconds of each other at 1:10.43, 1:11.33, and 1:12.50 respectively. Freshman Susan Smolaga followed with a collegiate debut in the 500m, recording a time of 1:37.96, while sophomore Lizbeth Diaz represented CCNY in the 1000m and finished in 4:11.65.

The Beavers added two relay teams to close out the day, with Bouzy, Pena, Smolaga, and Tien combining for a 14th-place finish in 5:04.66, while the quartet of Karuna Aikawa, Norma Flores, Choudhury, and Diaz crossed in 5:24.25 for 15th.

Distance efforts came from  Aikawa and Flores, who took on the 3000m and posted times of 12:52.27 and 13:02.82 respectively in their collegiate indoor debuts.

In the field, Hailey Thomas showed two-event versatility as CCNY's lone field competitor, landing a mark of 4.14m (13'7") in the long jump and throwing 6.03m (19'9.5") in the shot put to round out a full day of opening performances.

Next, the Beavers return to competition at the Seahawk Shootout on Friday, December 12.
