Brooklyn, NY - The City College of New York baseball team earned a split of their CUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday against John Jay College, defeating the Bloodhounds in the opener, 16-3, and falling in the nightcap, 8-3.
Game One - CCNY 16, John Jay 3
The Beaver's offense was clicking on all cylinders in the opener, tallying a season-high 15 hits. First basemen
Jonathan Rivera led the Beavers in game one against the Bloodhoods, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a homer and five RBI. Left fielder
Victor Murra Schott doubled twice and drove in four runs for CCNY. Shortstop
John Creegan went 2-for-2 in the opener, scoring four runs and drove in one run.
Freshman
Xavier Grobbel tallied a pair of hits and three runs in the game, while Tyler Diblsi notched a hit, two runs, and an RBI. Catcher
Austin Ortiz added a hit, one run, and two RBi, while Stephen Suprun had a hit, one run, and an RBI.
Senior outfield
Sardar Khanbilvardi had a hit and a run scored, while
Angel Vega went 1-for-1, registering his first hit of the season.
Freshman right-handed pitcher
James Dean Johnstone earned his third win of the season on the mound. In 5.0 innings, he allowed six hits and one run with eight strikeouts. Freshman
Josue Rodriguez made an appearance, working one frame, striking out two batters, while
Eamon Burke closed out the game allowing two hits and two runs with one strikeout.
Game Two - John Jay 8, CCNY 3
The Beavers scored their first run in the third inning when
Jonathan Rivera drove in second basemen Brandon Padier on an RBI sacrifice fly ball. In the sixth,
Xavier Grobbel reached home on a wild pitch for the team's second run.
Tyler DiBlasi drove in
John Creegan on an RBI hit-by-pitch with the base loaded in the sixth for the Beavers' third run.
Right-handed pitcher
Eric Romero took the loss tossing the game's first four innings.
Zach Boccio and
Jack Daly closed out the game with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.
The Beavers return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 13, with a midweek non-conference contest at Vassar College at 4:00 p.m.
