CCNY Women's Volleyball Outlasts Maritime in Five-Set Thriller

Catral, Jones, and Rivas Notch Double-Doubles to Lead the Beavers

Throggs Neck, NY - The City College of New York women's volleyball team earned their second-straight win, outlasting Maritime College in a five-set thriller on the road Wednesday night. The Beavers improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Beavers took the opening set, edging Maritime, 25-20. In the second set, CCNY held the Pritveers to a -.129 attacking percentage, taking the frame 25-15. In the third period, both teams traded the lead late, with Maritime fending off the Beavers to take the set 33-31. Maritime controlled the fourth set, grabbing a 25-20 win. In the final frame, two rallies helped lead the Beavers to secure the set 15-11.

The Beavers had three players notch double-doubles as Bianka Catral, Aubrey Jones, and Arianna Rivas led the squad with career-high totals. Catral had a career-high outing, completing the night with 24 kills, 15 digs, and three blocks, all career-high for her. Jones dished out a match-high 45 assists and 14 digs, while Rivas stacked up a career-high 11 kills and a team-high 19 digs.

Sophomore Viviana Alatorre posted double-digit digs for the second-straight game, finishing with 14 on the night. Senior Nadia Campoverde recorded seven kills, nine digs, two blocks, and a pair of aces. Sophomore Serena Warner added four kills and a staggering six blocks in the match. 

Freshman Nila Tom finished with six kills and four blocks, while sophomore Michelle Fernandez added five digs.

The Beavers will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 8, against St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn at 7:00 p.m.
