Hoboken, NJ - The City College of New York baseball program opened the 2023 season on Sunday, dropping a doubleheader on the road against Stevens Institute of Technology.
Game One: Stevens 14, CCNY 2
The Beavers finished game one of their season opener with eight hits. Sophomore Jonathan Rivera led the Beavers going 2-for-4 at the plate, and scored one run. Freshman Mike Savino had an impressive collegiate debut, finishing 2-for-3 in the game. Sophomore Victor Murra Schott recorded one hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Sophomore Stephen Suprun had a hit and an RBI, while sophomore Michael Chasanov tallied a hit.
The Beavers scored their first run in the third inning on Murra Schott's RBI single up the middle. In the sixth, Murra Schott tallied the Beaver's second run, reaching home on Suprun's RBI single through the right side.
On the mound, sophomore James Dean Johnstone earned the start for the Lavender and Black, striking out four batters in three innings.
Game Two: Stevens 13, CCNY 2
In the finale of the doubleheader, Rivera finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in the game. Murra Schott added a hit, and a run scored. Freshman Chris Lamond and sophomore Eric Romero each tallied a hit.
Rivera was responsible for the Beavers' two runs, knocking a two-run homer to right-center in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore Brandon Paider earned the loss on the mound. Sophomore Jack Daly earned two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Freshman Kevin Budzinski made his college debut, striking out two in 2.1 innings of work.
Next, the Beavers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, on the road against Rutgers-Newark at noon.
