Bronx, NY - The City College of New York baseball team opened CUNY Athletic Conference play on Sunday, splitting a doubleheader against Baruch College. CCNY fell to the Bearcats in the opener, 15-1, before bouncing back in game two, 16-5.
With the win, the Beavers improve to 5-10 overall and 1-1 in CUNYAC play.
Game One: Baruch 15, CCNY 1
In the opener, the Bearcats defeated the Beavers 15-1.
Michael Chasanov and
Rich Cirigliano each had a hit in the contest. Right-handed pitcher
James Dean Johnstone took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits and three errors.
Game Two: CCNY 16, Baruch 5
The Bearcats got on the boards first, tallying two runs on a pair of hits in the first inning to take an early lead, 2-0.
The Beavers answered back in force, piling up seven runs.
Jonathan Rivera sparked the run with a two-RBI double to center field. Freshman
Rich Cirigliano sent an RBI double to left center.
Ethan Angress drove in fourth on an RBI SAC fly, followed by
Kevin Budzinski's RBI walk to extend the Beaver's lead to 5-2.
Stephen Suprun reached home on a balk before Creegan's RBI walk secured the team's seventh and final run of the inning.
The Beavers continued their scoring in the third inning, A trio of RBI base hits by Creegan, Rivera, and Cirigliano boosted the Beavers to a 10-5 advantage. Angress and
Alex Montanile followed with RBI single's of their own to extend to 12-5.
CCNY scored their final four runs in the fifth inning. Suprun's RBI single through the right side and Angress's RBI single up the middle added two runs for the Beavers (13-5). Creegan drove in the game's final two runs, delivering a two-RBI single to right-center to hand the Beavers a 16-5 victory.
On the mound, right-handed pitcher
Brandon Paider improved to 3-1 on the season with the victory. He stuck out five, allowing five runs and seven hits. Sophomore
Matthew Kue made an appearance, working 1.0 innings, while
Max Murray closed out the final inning, tallying two strikeouts.
Next, CCNY continues the conference play by hosting Lehman College on Saturday, April 8.
