New York, NY The City College of New York deeply mourns the loss of former legendary men's basketball student-athlete, head coach, and hall of famer Floyd Layne, who passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024, at the age of 95.

An iconic figure in college and New York City basketball, Layne was a member of the historic 1949-50 CCNY men's basketball team, the only team in collegiate history to win both the NIT and NCAA Championships in the same year. Described as quick-witted, easygoing, and articulate, Layne matched his athletic game-changing attributes, along with his high basketball IQ, to become an instrumental part of the Beavers's historic championship run.

Layne began his professional career in 1954, playing in the Eastern Professional Basketball League for nine seasons. He was named an All-EPAL twice (1955 & 1956) and led the Hazleton Hawks (1956-57) and Williamsport Billies (1961-62) to the Continental Basketball Association finals.

After playing professionally, Layne began coaching at CUNY, where he was head coach at Queensborough Community College for three seasons (1971–74). In 1974, he returned home to City College, taking the helm of the men's basketball program. Layne led the Beavers for 14 seasons (1974-88), guiding the program's resurgence. Under Layne, the Beavers captured four CUNYAC Championships, finishing his tenure as the third all-time winningest coach in the program's history, and accumulating a 139-223 record.

In 1982, Layne was inducted into the CCNY Athletics Hall of Fame, celebrating his accomplishments as a player and coach. He was also inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003 and was among the Inaugural Bronx Basketball Hall of Fame Class.

Layne was a staple in the Harlem community. He used the sport of basketball as a vehicle to empower and guide young players while fostering the importance of education. He mentored and coached countless local basketball players, working in recreation centers for the New York City Board of Education and the New York City Youth Board.

Layne completed his undergraduate degree in education at CCNY in 1957 and later earned his master's degree in education at Columbia University.
