New Brunswick, NJ - The City College of New York men's track & field team delivered a competitive showing at the Rutgers Relays, highlighted by strong sprint performances and solid relay finishes against a deep field of regional competition.
Freshman Mustapha Abubakar led the way in the 100 meters, placing 11th overall with a time of 10.81, one of the top CUNYAC marks of the meet. Teammate Jonathan Patterson also competed in the event, clocking an 11.22 finish. In the middle-distance events, Michael Abayev turned in a steady performance in the 800 meters, crossing the line in 2:02.23.
CCNY showed depth in the 400-meter hurdles, with Antonio Oliveira-Nurse pacing the group in 1:08.36, followed by Daniel Gonzalez (1:14.62) and Muniru Abdulai (1:18.35).
The Beavers made their biggest impact in relay competition. The Beavers' 4x200 relay team Abubakar, Patterson, Justice Omoruyi, and Muniro Abdulai earned a podium finish, placing third with a time of 1:38.81, while the B squad, consisting of Oliveira-Nurse, Mihir Kapoor, Dontay Mobley, Daniel Gonzalez followed closely in fourth at 1:55.37. In the 4x100 relay, CCNY posted a time of 44.99 to finish eighth overall.
In the field events, Matthew Zboinski recorded a mark of 36.29 meters in the javelin to lead CCNY's efforts.
Next, the Beavers will return to action on Saturday, April 18th at the Rider Invitational.
