The City College of New York women's basketball team will face No 1-seeded Lehman College on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the CUNYAC Semifinals. This is the first time since at least 2006, the year City began hosting the CUNYAC Tournament, that the women have made it to the semifinals.
During the regular season, City fell to Lehman in both match-ups. First, they took the Lightning to overtime and fell 80-83. Then later during the season fell 69-58 at home.
The Beavers enter the semifinal match on a two-game winning streak, including their 80-30 win over York in the quarterfinals. Lehman has won nine of their last 10 games entering the tournament. As the number one seed, the Lightning earned a bye into the semifinals.
CCNY boasts a 17-9 record, which is the most wins since 1994-95 when the Beavers finished 18-9. City brings in a solid starting five to face up against Lehman. CCNY has the third best scoring offense in the conference as they average 65 points per game and has the second best scoring defense where they only allow 55.4 points per game from their opponents.
The Lightning enters the tournament 18-7 and searching for their first conference title since 2007. Lehman will use CUNYAC Player of the Year, Amely Del Rosario as the focus of winning the game. The junior point guard's 23 points per game is second in NCAA Division III. The Lightning had Jennifer Navarro named to CUNYAC All-Star First Team and Amani Lightbourne to CUNYAC All-Star Second Team. Lehman leads the conference with a .672 free-throw percentage, but CCNY is right behind with a .662 percentage.
