New York, NY - The City College of New York women's basketball team orchestrated a stellar first quarter of play Wednesday night but was able to sustain their strong start, falling at home to Baruch College, 81-40.
After the Bearcats scored the opening basket of the contest, the Beavers jumped out with a 6-0 run, as
Monae Laing and Thresa Luna drained three-pointers to put CCNY ahead 6-2 with 6:13 left in the quarter. After back-to-back baskets from Baruch's Sophia Encarnacio to even the contest at 6-6, the Beavers regained the lead with an 8-0 run, jumping out to an eight-point lead, 14-6, with 1:11 left in the period. CCNY closed out the opening quarter leading the Bearcats, 14-8.
The Bearcats cut the Beaver's lead to three points (14-11)with a three-pointer to start the quarter. Back-to-back layups by Laing pushed CCNY's lead margin back up to a seven-point cushion (18-11) with 7:26 to go. The Bearcats regained control throughout the period's final minutes, outscoring the Beavers 21-2, owning a 32-20 advantage at halftime.
Baruch managed the pace across the final two periods, outscoring the Beavers 49-20 to secure an 81-40 victory.
Laing notched her fifth straight fifth consecutive double-double, tallying 21 points and a season-high 19 rebounds. Freshman
Fatoumata Nantoume added ten points, three rebounds, and two assists.
