Staten Island, NY - The City College of New York Men's Track & Field program kicked off its 2025–26 indoor season on Saturday at the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational, hosted by St. John's University at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.
Freshman Mustapha Abubakar headlined the day with a breakout performance, placing 14th in the 60m in 7.14 before returning to take 4th overall in the 200m with a blazing 22.72, marking one of the top opening-day marks in the conference. He was joined in the sprints by fellow first-year Jonathan Paterson, who ran 7.33 in the 60m and 24.26 in the 200m, while David Similca impressed with a 23.90 in the 200m and a 38.99 in the 300m. Justice Omoruyi opened in 25.04 for 200m and recorded one of CCNY's top quarter-mile marks of the meet with a strong 54.47 in the 400m, while Muniru Abdulai (26.21) rounded out a deep sprinting group.
The mid-distance events produced promising early indicators, as Similca (38.99) and Daniel Gonzalez (45.27) stretched into the 300m, while Tristan Hyltan (3:20.07) and Henry Robles (3:48.20) took on the 1000m. CCNY also placed three in the 3000m, with Jared Bravo leading the way in 10:53.07, followed by Trent Santoro (11:07.06) and Robles doubling back for 13:10.27 as the group settled into early-season pacing.
In the relays, CCNY secured two top-10 finishes in the 4x400m, as Similca, Omoruyi, Paterson, and Abdulai combined for a strong 3:54.39—good for 8th overall—with Bravo, Santoro, Hyltan, and Robles following in 10th place at 4:24.92, giving the freshman-heavy roster valuable chemistry-building reps.
The field unit delivered strong results of its own, led by Abdulai's 11th-place mark of 5.78m (18'11.75") in the long jump and Daniel Gonzalez's 4.63m (15'2.25") performance. Freshman thrower Matthew Zboinski opened his collegiate career with one of the program's most productive dual-event days, throwing 8.67m (28'5.5") in the shot put and 9.09m (29'10") in the weight throw.
Next, the Beavers return to competition at the Seahawk Shootout on Friday, December 12.
