CCNY's Mustapha Abubakar Breaks Freshman Record, Clocks Second-Fastest 60m in CCNY History at West Point Tune Up meet

West Point, NY - The City College of New York men's track & field team turned in a strong showing at the West Point Tune-Up meet, highlighted by a historic performance from freshman Mustapha Abubakar.

Abubakar delivered a breakout day in the men's 60 meters, clocking a 6.92 in the finals to finish second overall. The time stands as the second-fastest mark in program history, trailing only Peter Dehazya's school record of 6.77, and also established a new CCNY freshman record. Earlier in the day, Abubakar advanced to the finals after posting a 7.02 in the preliminaries.

Abubakar continued his impressive meet in the 200 meters, placing seventh overall with a time of 22.52. Teammates David Similca (24.24) and Muniru Abdulai (25.66) also competed in the event.

In the 400 meters, Similca led CCNY with a 55.21, followed closely by Justice Omoruyi at 56.26, while Henry Robles rounded out the group with a time of 1:13.31.

The 800 meters featured solid efforts from Tristan Hyltan, who crossed the line in 2:29.45, and Robles, who posted a 3:01.93.

Freshman Dontay Mobley represented CCNY in multiple events, finishing 12th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 11.52. Mobley also impressed in the triple jump, placing fourth overall with a top mark of 10.81 meters (35' 5.75"), recorded on his fifth attempt.

Next, the team will compete at the 2026 CUNY Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday, March 1, at the Armory Track and Field Center.
